This week there are 250+ people gathered in the hills of Marion County, Alabama--sleeping in cabins, eating yummy food, and spending a week in the Word of God at Maywood Christian Camp for the 7th session of the summer. I have not missed this week of camp in eleven years. My mom, brother, uncle, and cousin are there together along with so many other people that I love and that have made me into the person that I am today.
The administrator and director of this week of camp, Jeff Goff, loves the song, “How Great Thou Art.” Every single night at the end of our ballfield devo, the senior campers (13-18-year-olds) sing this song. When I think of the 7th week of Maywood, this is what I think about—concluding every single day by a group of teenagers and adults praising our God for how incredibly great and awesome and powerful and wonderful He is. Because of all that He created, that He saved all of mankind, and that one day He will return and take us Home; He deserves so much praise that words are not enough to tell Him how great He is.
Maywood Christian Camp holds a special place in my heart because of all of the spiritual growth that I have had there, but Maywood would not be Maywood without God being present there because some of His people are there!!
This morning I was worshipping with the Buford Church of Christ in Buford, Georgia where I have been working all summer with the girls in the youth group. As we were in worship this morning, we stood up to sing the song before the sermon, and I bet you will never guess what it was – “How Great Thou Art.” As we sang, tears started coming to my eyes. But then.. I had peace-filled moment that passed all my humanly understanding as I sang.
Singing this song this morning reminded me that ANYWHERE that I am with God’s people I am at home because they are my brothers and sisters in Him and because HE, HIMSELF, IS THERE.
We praise and worship the same God who created all of us. We praise and worship the same God who sent His Son for all of us. We praise and worship the same God who will take us all home one day where we will all be together and there will be no more sorrowful goodbye’s.
I listen to the crickets and look to the sky to see the summer sunsets in Georgia and know how creative our God is. Those that are at Maywood this week can listen to the crickets and look to the sky to see the summer sunsets and see how creative our God is.
I see Him working here in Georgia through His people and see how alive and well His Spirit is. Those that are at Maywood this week can see Him working at camp through His people and see how alive and well His Spirit is.
I hear rolling thunder in a thunderstorm here in Georgia and know how POWERFUL He is. Those that are at Maywood can hear booming thunder and know how POWERFUL He is.
I listen to birds chirp or a group of His people sing in Georgia and be reminded that all creation praises His Name--even us. While the people at Maywood this week can listen to birds chirp or a group of His people sing and also be reminded that all Creation everywhere praises Him--even us.
I see the smallest little details in a tree or the smallest little blessing in anything and be reminded that God is so purposeful and intricate in all that He does. The people at Maywood this week are also going to see the smallest little details in a child or in a song that God cares about us so much—even to the tiniest details of our lives.
Whether I am at Maywood, in Tupelo, at FHU, or right here in Buford—I am at HOME when I am with His people. He is Great Everywhere because HE is GOD – and He is the – I AM. Wherever you are this summer, look for these things around you. Look for these little glimpses we have of our Father.
GOD is GREAT whether I am at home or afar.
GOD is GREAT whether I am experiencing JOY or SORROW.
GOD is GREAT whether I am on a mountaintop or in a valley.
GOD is GREAT ALL THE TIME.
This summer has been such an adventure, and God has done so many wonderful things over the course of the summer. As of today, I have 2 and ½ weeks left here in Buford. The closer we get to the end of the summer, the more I am cherishing my time with the sweet people here. They have truly become like family, and I am looking forward to making the MOST out of these last couple of weeks and watching God work in ways that only He can!!
