“But now thus says the Lord, He who created you, O Jacob, He who formed you, O Israel: ‘Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers they shall not overwhelm you; and through the fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy Ole of Israel, your Savior…” - Isaiah 43:1-3
God does not give you a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-control. - 2 Timothy 1:7
“So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgement, because He is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because He first loved us.” - I John 4:16-19
We can see the love of God through the people He puts in our lives to get us through the hard times. That’s why God gave us the Church… the Church that is full of people striving to help each other out. In Acts 6, seven men were chosen to serve the widows that were being neglected. These women had to be afraid because they were not getting the necessities of life. But these men and the churches around stepped up to help them out. The love of God was in these men.
In the book of Ruth, we are told of the story of Ruth and Naomi. Ruth stood by her mother-in-law, Naomi, when she did not have to. If Ruth would not have stood by her then Naomi would not have had a way to get the food she needed. Ruth told Naomi in Ruth 1:16, “Do not urge me to leave you or to return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people shall be my people, and your God my God.” Ruth stood by Naomi and truly showed her the love of God. (Fun Fact: Ruth met a man named Boaz, and they had a son named Obed. This ended up being a part of the lineage of Jesus. Our God is so awesome and works in the coolest ways.)
We are to the part of the year where many start to get a little nervous. Whether it is a small child starting kindergarten, a 14 year-old starting high school, a 18 year-old starting college, or someone starting a job for the first time teaching, or even a parent of any of these sending their child off to a new adventure… people start to get a anxious about the new adventures lying ahead.
I want to encourage you… wherever your new adventure is: YOU ARE NOT ALONE. You have so many people going through the exact same thing you are, but more importantly the awesome God we serve is walking with you the entire way. Our God is only a PRAYER away. He will listen to your worry-filled tears at 3am before your first day and also your joy-filled excitement at 5pm after you have overcome your fear.
God is already there. And He will get you through the waters and the fire. He is standing there waiting for you to make it through to the other side.
You can walk on the water just like Peter did if you keep you faith and focus on Jesus. And if you start to sink, grab on to Jesus’ hand, and He will pull you right back up.
You can’t walk on the water and through the fire without your eyes on Jesus. Do NOT fear. His eyes were on you as He bore your sins on the cross, so as we walk through this life, don’t lose sight of Him.
